WITH POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY
At New horizon Gurukul we strive to help our students develop good character, imbibe the values of fairness, honesty and trust, to take responsibility for their actions and participate in ensuring responsible behaviour in the society. Student’s Prefectorial Elections is a valuable practical teaching and learning experience in these domains.
On 9th June, 2017, elections were held for the Students’ Prefectorial body, under the able guidance and supervision of the teachers. The nominees for the post of captain were from 10th standard and the deputy captains from the 9th standard. During the campaign the candidates were given time to speak to the entire student body, allowed to visit classrooms and finally to campaign openly.
On the Election Day, the voters’ names (that of both teachers and students) were checked against the staff list and class list. Their index fingers were marked with ink before allowing them into the polling booth, wherein they could make their choice in utmost privacy.
The results were declared on 12th June, 2017. It was indeed a bitter sweet experience for our shishyas.
Thereafter began our preparation for the ‘Prefect Investiture Ceremony’- regular rehearsals, briefing the students about their roles and tasks, sending out the invites and many more. It had been a hectic week at New horizon Gurukul.
The investiture ceremony was solemnised on 16.6.2017. The honourable chief guest for the auspicious occasion was Ms Sargam Manghnani, Director, New Horizon Gurukul. It was presided over by Ms. Sheela Balamurali, our Principal. Other dignitaries included Ms. Chitralekha, Senior coordinator, Ms Indu R Pai, Middle school coordinator and Ms Sandhya Khandekar, Primary school coordinator.
The school council members were conferred upon with sashes and badges and the flags were handed over, a symbolic representation of handing over the responsibility to the new office bearers. Watching them don the mantle of responsibility is a moment of pride for the school as well as the parents.
Ms. Devika Deevasan, the school captain administered the oath to the leaders. Master Anish Sreenivas, school captain delivered his acceptance speech, promising to abide by the qualities of a true leader and keeping the mantle of New Horizon Gurukul flying high.
Leadership is not about a title or designation. It is about creating an impact, involving others to spread the passion for work and the ability to inspire the team. We wish our student council all the best in their endeavour to set an example and reach out to Gurukulites.
