Hands-on Learning Workshop on DNA Fingerprinting and Gel Electrophoresis

Event Details:

On 20th September 2024, a hands-on workshop on DNA fingerprinting and Gel Electrophoresis was conducted for grades 11 and 12 Biology students at New Horizon Gurukul. The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from 30 students, who had the unique opportunity to engage in real-life applications of molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, gel electrophoresis, and UV visualization. Dr Deepti Saini, an eminent scientist from IISc Bangalore, led the session. She brought her wealth of knowledge and experience to guide students through the intricate processes involved in DNA fingerprinting. Dr Saini provided detailed insights into the principles and applications of DNA fingerprinting, including its relevance in forensic science, genetic research, and medical diagnostics.

During the workshop, the participants had the chance to work hands-on with isolation DNA from samples and visualize it using UV light. The practical exposure to gel electrophoresis helped them understand how DNA fragments are separated and analyzed, offering a deeper understanding of this critical technique in modern biology. This enriching learning experience enhanced the students’ grasp of theoretical concepts and significantly boosted their interest in molecular biology. The workshop provided a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in DNA analysis, making it an invaluable experience for all the participants.
