New Horizon Gurukul introduces Hydroponics in the curriculum
Smart solutions and urban farming technique, HYDROPONICS was formally introduced by New Horizon Gurukul in the curriculum on 30th June 2022. Hydroponics, a blend of agriculture and technology, is a modern way used to increase yield, quality and profitability without using soil.The objective of integrating this revamped technique of growing crops was to bring Gurukulites more closer to nature and enrich their gardening practices. This would also make them self-reliant to grow their own veggies in future without any dependence on external sources.
Twenty five senior secondary students, green ambassdors and teachers were trained in a 3 hour workshop by Ms.Nidhi George from City Greens, Bangalore. Students showed great enthusiasm in preparing soil beds, nutrient media and transplanting the saplings in Dutch buckets and NFT channels in the newly constructed net house.
200 saplings of spinach, parsley, kale, and lollo rosso were transplanted today in the NFT channels. 40 saplings of cherry tomatoes, capsicum and chilles were planted in Dutch buckets along with sowing of various seeds of various vegetables. Seed trays for brinjal, cabbage, broccoli ,beetroot and amaranthus were also prepared by students for 20 grow bags.
The entire trainings session made students understand the benefits of growing large variety of crops in small space without any compromise on the nutrient value of the produce. The first harvest is expected in first two weeks and the entire session brought in fresh learning experience to everyone involved !!
